Hardware wallet setup checklist for Solana
Moving from a browser extension to a hardware wallet changes how you confirm every transaction. The setup process also differs — you generate keys on the device itself, not in the browser. This checklist covers Ledger and Solana-compatible devices using Phantom as the connecting app.
Before you unbox
- Buy directly from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller — not secondhand marketplaces
- Verify tamper-evident packaging is intact
- Have pen, paper, and a private space ready for writing your seed phrase
Device initialization
- Power on the device and follow on-screen language selection
- Choose "Set up as new device" — never "Restore" unless you are recovering an existing seed
- Set a PIN (minimum 6 digits; avoid birthdays)
- Write down the 24-word recovery phrase exactly as shown — word order matters
- Confirm the phrase on-device when prompted
Install Solana app on device
Using Ledger Live or the manufacturer's companion app, install the Solana application onto the hardware device. Keep firmware updated, but only through official software.
Connect to Phantom
- Open Phantom in your browser
- Add a new wallet → Connect hardware wallet
- Select your device type and approve the connection on the hardware screen
- Your Solana address appears in Phantom — copy it for a test receive
Test with a small amount
Send a small SOL amount from your old hot wallet to the new hardware address. Confirm it arrives on Solscan. Then send a tiny amount back. Only after both directions work should you transfer larger holdings.
Ongoing habits
- Verify receive addresses on the hardware screen, not just in Phantom
- Store the seed phrase using the methods in our storage guide
- Keep the device firmware updated through official channels
